Overview

The client's data platform had grown up around Azure Synapse Analytics and a MySQL datamart, serving reporting needs across Salesforce CRM, Shopify, and internal systems. It worked, but years of incremental growth had left it fragile: business logic buried in database views, long pipelines that were hard to change safely, and no clear line between raw data and data anyone could trust. ProtoComet led a phased migration to Microsoft Fabric, using the move as an opportunity to rebuild the platform properly rather than simply recreate what already existed.

Challenge

Three things were compounding. MySQL, built for transactions rather than analytics, slowed under heavy scans and aggregations as data and costs climbed. A sprawling master pipeline and business logic buried in SQL views made changes slow and risky. Worst of all, with no catalogue, layering, or endorsement signal, finding the right table meant asking around and hoping it was correct.

Approach

Migration ran in two iterations. The first moved pipelines into Fabric as-is, keeping MySQL as the target so reporting stayed untouched. The second was the real rebuild: data now flows through a Medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold), stored natively in OneLake, with certified Power BI semantic models on top, so anyone can find trustworthy data without asking the data team.
